Kumquot
Description:
Kumquot is an evergreen shurbs or trees of the family Rutaceae, grown for their tart orange fruits. A kumquat isn’t much bigger than a grape, yet this bite-sized fruit fills your mouth with a big burst of sweet-tart citrus flavor. The English name “kumquat” comes from a Cantonese word that means “golden orange” or “golden tangerine". They are packed with fiber and Vitamin C and are low in calories. They’ve got some calcium, Vitamin A, riboflavin, iron, manganese and potassium, to boot. In traditional Chinese medicine, kumquats are said to help with sore throats, excessive phlegm and coughs.
Plant Care:
- Light: Kumquat prefers full sun to partial shade and will grow best in bright, indirect light.
- Soil: This tree requires well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter.
- Water: Kumquat should be watered regularly, but avoid overwatering as this can lead to root rot. The soil should be kept consistently moist but not waterlogged.
- Fertilizer: Fertilize the tree once a month during the growing season with a balanced citrus fertilizer.
- Pruning: Pruning the tree regularly is important to maintain a healthy shape and to remove any dead or damaged branches.
- Pests and Diseases: Kumquat is generally disease-resistant but can be susceptible to pests such as scale insects and spider mites. Regularly inspecting the tree and treating any infestations promptly can help keep it healthy.
